"Defying Inequality" A Success!

Monday night's star-studded evening of speeches and performances on Broadway to promote equality throughout the nation was a smashing success!   The evening included appearances by Bebe Neuwirth, Kelli O’Hara, Jane Fonda, Harvey Fierstein and cast members from the musicals “Spring Awakening” and “Hair”.    Vermont Freedom to Marry is a beneficiary of the fundraiser, and heartily thanks all concerned for an amazing event.

Beth’s Blog: Why Not A Referendum?

Beth Robinson When people know they have a losing argument on the substance, they quickly turn to process. So it is with the debate about the freedom to marry. Recognizing that Vermonters have too much actual experience with reality at this point to buy the fears and hype that many foes of gay and lesbian civil rights try to sell, we can expect that opponents in Vermont will turn increasing attention to the process. “Put it to vote of the people,” they’ll say.

#8: Sherry, Michael, and the Checkbox Problem

Married

About a year ago my friend Sherry got a call from the Vermont Department of Health.  They were conducting a survey.  The first question they asked her was whether she was married or single.  That was it, the State of Vermont didn’t even include civil union on the option list.

He didn’t fit the typical demographic of a Vermont Freedom to Marry volunteer back in that era, and I wanted to make sure he wasn’t there by accident—it really wasn’t the best place to meet young, cute, single guys.

Beth's Blog: A Dozen Stories. A Dozen Reasons. #6

#6: Lisa and Jenny

My friends Lisa and Jenny confronted the obstacles we all face when we contemplate crossing the border—knowing that our civil union may mean nothing legally, or practically speaking, when we leave Vermont.  Late in her pregnancy with their son, Simon, Jenny developed preeclampsia.

Our Heroes: Senator John Campbell

John Campbell is the kind of Senator you want on your side.  He fights doggedly for fairness when he sees an injustice.  It's how he practices law, and it's how he serves in the Senate.

Senator Campbell wasn't in the Vermont Senate in 2000 when it passed the civil union law, so he missed the ups and downs that accompanied that fateful debate.

Beth’s Blog: The State and Civil Marriage

Br-head Why not “just get the state out of the marriage business?”

If I had a penny for every time someone said, “I think we should just get the state out of the marriage business and have civil unions for everyone; let’s leave marriage to the church!”  then I could stop spending so much time raising money for Vermont Freedom to Marry.
