Even in a state with marriage equality, LGBT families face discrimination. Some companies that are based out of state and employ Vermonters offer family insurance coverage, but only to heterosexual couples.
To remedy this, Vermont State Representatives Paul Poirier and Patti Komline "are drafting legislation that would require all companies that offer spousal benefits to straight employees to do the same for their gay workers." California already has such a law. As a result, large employers employing people in California now offer family coverage to all kinds of families.
