Update: March 19, 2004

From Mass Equality:

Please Read, Take Action and Forward

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court made history last November when they declared marriage discrimination unconstitutional. Now we are making history. Our campaign for equality is gaining strength on Main Street and in the State House.

When our state legislators voted last week to continue debating a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, three things were clear.

- Seventy-seven legislators voted to defeat the amendment outright.

- We had mobilized thousands of enthusiastic supporters of equality.

- The radical right and religious fundamentalists see Massachusetts as ground zero in the culture wars.

Because legislators will be meeting again on March 29th, we moved quickly to analyze the situation inside the State House and respond. Last night, we held organizing meetings in five locations around the state. More will follow soon. This weekend, we will be standing on busy sidewalks in 14 House districts and 3 Senate districts to educate potential voters about same-sex marriage and to gather signatures on postcards to legislators.

Our plans are ambitious. This morning, we will ask our thousands of supporters in Massachusetts to sign-up through our website to work for three hours this weekend. We hope to harness the tremendous energy of more than 800 volunteers. Many will drive far from home to stand out for equality. If we are successful, we will generate thousands of new messages from constituents -- which we will hand-deliver to legislators who favor a civil union "compromise." We will also identify thousands of new supporters across the state who will help us face whatever challenges lie ahead.

We are truly making a difference. We are building a movement to protect America's first state-sanctioned same-sex marriages. The people of Massachusetts are fair-minded. We can win their support, but not without cost. We must raise $75,000 before March 29th to fully fund our field organizing efforts. Your support is critical.

Please make a donation now. Then forward this message to all your friends. With your help, we will prevail.

Thank you,
Marty Rouse
Campaign Coordinator

P.S. Your donation today will help save the constitutional guarantee of equality in Massachusetts.
